Tutor help · Fraction–Decimal–Percent Conversions

Every conversion is one of two moves: slide the point two places (decimal ↔ percent) or divide / write-over-100-and-simplify (fraction ↔ the other two).

Direction matters: decimal → percent slides right (0.4 → 40%); percent → decimal slides left (75% → 0.75). If your percent is smaller than your decimal, you went the wrong way.

For a percent of a number, convert first, then multiply: 15% of 80 = 0.15 × 80 = 12. Benchmarks (50/25/10/1%) give you a mental-math check.

1 Quick self-help

Three fixes that solve most stuck moments.

1

Point sliding the wrong way?

Say it out loud: “percent means per hundred, so the percent number is bigger.” Decimal → percent always grows: 0.4 → 40%.

2

Fraction → percent stuck?

Divide first, ask questions later: 3 ÷ 8 = 0.375, then slide right two → 37.5%. The division is always step one.

3

Percent of a number exploding?

If you got 1200 for “15% of 80”, you multiplied by 15 instead of 0.15. The % sign must become ÷100 before any multiplication.

2 Common questions

Short answers to the questions tutors hear most.

Is 0.5% the same as 50%?
Answer
No — and this is the classic trap. 50% = 0.5, but 0.5% = 0.005. Read the % sign carefully: it always means ÷100.
Why do I slide two places and not one?
Answer
Because percent means per hundred, and 100 = 10². Two zeros, two places.
How do I convert a percent like 37.5% to a fraction?
Answer
Write it over 100: 37.5/100, then clear the decimal by doubling top and bottom → 75/200 = 3/8.
