Graphing Lines Tutor Help
Stuck on graphing lines? Review the core ideas, read answers to common questions, and send a question to a tutor.
1 Quick recap
Graph with the intercept method: set x = 0 for the y-intercept, y = 0 for the x-intercept, plot both, and connect with a straightedge. Tables fill gaps; marked points on a graph give you the slope via rise over run.
Core ideas
- x-intercept: y = 0. y-intercept: x = 0.
- Spread plotted points out; intercepts are ideal.
- Linear graphs are perfectly straight — use a straightedge.
- Tables: pick easy x-values, compute y, plot.
- Two marked points → slope → equation.
2 Questions students ask
The questions a tutor hears most about this skill.
Usually one plotted point is off by a grid square — with close-together points, a tiny error tilts the whole line. Re-plot using the intercepts, which are far apart and forgiving.
Intercept first: find where each candidate crosses the y-axis and eliminate. Then check slope direction (climbing or falling). Two checks usually leave one graph standing.
No — tables are one route. If the equation is y = mx + b, the intercept method is faster. Use tables when x-values are handed to you or intercepts are messy fractions.
