Descriptive Stats Tutor Help

Summarize data with measures of center and spread, pick the right graph, and describe distributions with SOCS.

1 Concept recap

The essentials of Descriptive Statistics, on one screen.

1 Concept recap

Center

Mean = sum/n (pulled by skew). Median = middle of sorted data (resistant). Mode = most frequent.

Spread

Range = max − min. IQR = Q3 − Q1 (middle 50%). SD = root-mean-square distance from the mean.

Shape & graphs

Mean chases the tail: mean > median → right skew. Categorical → bar chart; quantitative → histogram; comparing groups → boxplots.

SOCS

Shape, Outliers, Center, Spread — always in context. Skewed → median/IQR; symmetric → mean/SD.
