Summarize data with measures of center and spread, pick the right graph, and describe distributions with SOCS.
1 Mean vs median lab
Click on the number line to add data points. Watch the mean and median markers — then add an outlier and see which one moves.
Tip: build a symmetric mound first (mean ≈ median), then drop a point far to the right.

Mean: –
Median: –
2 What to notice
- The mean slides toward every new point — it feels the outlier’s pull.
- The median barely moves until the outlier crosses the middle of the pack.
- This is why news reports use the median for house prices and incomes: one mansion should not define “typical”.
