Scientific Notation Practice

Skill: scientific-notation

Scientific Notation Practice

An endless supply of never-repeating problems with instant feedback. Convert both directions, count the hops, multiply powers of 10, and compare magnitudes — one problem at a time.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss walks you through the full solution.

Score 0 · Streak 0 · Problem 0
Score counts first-try correct answers. Streak counts consecutive correct answers.

How to enter answers

  • Scientific notation: type 3.2×10^4 directly. We also accept 3.2x10^4, 3.2*10^4, or 3.2e4. Spacing does not matter.
  • Proper form required: the coefficient must satisfy 1 ≤ N < 10 — 32×10^3 is marked wrong for 32,000 (hop once more: 3.2×10^4).
  • Standard form: type the plain number, e.g. 0.0025 or 250000.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from 12 templates — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Convert to scientific notation

Count the hops for big numbers, small decimals, plain integers, and numbers already near 1.

32,000 → 3.2×10^4  ·  0.00045 → 4.5×10^-4

Convert to standard form

Hop the decimal the other way: positive exponents grow the number, negative exponents shrink it.

2.5×10^5 → 250,000  ·  1.6×10^-3 → 0.0016

Multiply & compare

Multiply coefficients, add exponents, renormalize — plus hop-counting and magnitude comparisons.

(6×10^4)(5×10^2) → 3×10^7
