Fraction Operations Practice

Skill: fraction-operations

Fraction Operations Practice

An endless supply of never-repeating fraction problems with instant feedback. Add and subtract with like and unlike denominators, multiply with canceling, divide with keep-change-flip, and work with mixed numbers — one problem at a time.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss walks you through the full solution.

Score 0 · Streak 0 · Problem 0
Score counts first-try correct answers. Streak counts consecutive correct answers.
Add: like denominators

How to enter answers

  • Fraction: type a/b, like 11/12. Any equivalent form counts, and mixed numbers like 1 1/2 are accepted too.
  • Always simplify — but if you forget, an equivalent unsimplified answer still counts.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from 10 templates — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Add & subtract

Like denominators (add the tops) and unlike denominators (rename with the LCD first).

1/4 + 2/3 → 11/12

Multiply & divide

Straight across with canceling; keep-change-flip for division.

3/4 ÷ 2/5 → 15/8

Mixed numbers & words

Convert to improper fractions first; recipes and servings in word problems.

1 1/2 + 2 1/4 → 3 3/4

3 Watch out for these

The three mistakes students make most often with fraction operations.

1. Adding the denominators

Wrong: 1/2 + 1/3 = 2/5.   Right: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6. Rename to a common denominator; add only the tops.

2. Forgetting to flip when dividing

Wrong: 3/4 ÷ 2/5 = 6/20.   Right: 3/4 × 5/2 = 15/8. Keep, change, flip.

3. Not simplifying the final answer

Wrong: leaving 6/15.   Right: 6/15 = 2/5. Make “simplify last” a reflex.
