Transformations Tutor Help
A one-page recap of the transformation rules, plus a way to ask a tutor for a worked explanation.
1 Quick recap
The essentials on one page before you ask for help.
The nine rules
Translate 〈h,k〉: (x, y) → (x+h, y+k) · Dilate by k: (x, y) → (kx, ky)
Reflect x-axis: (x,−y) · y-axis: (−x,y) · y=x: (y,x) · origin: (−x,−y)
Rotate 90° CW: (y,−x) · 90° CCW: (−y,x) · 180°: (−x,−y)
Reflect x-axis: (x,−y) · y-axis: (−x,y) · y=x: (y,x) · origin: (−x,−y)
Rotate 90° CW: (y,−x) · 90° CCW: (−y,x) · 180°: (−x,−y)
Translations, reflections, and rotations are rigid (shape and size stay). Dilations rescale by k.
Stuck? Check these first
- Over y = x, coordinates only trade places: (4, 1) → (1, 4).
- Dilation multiplies every coordinate of every vertex.
- Clockwise 90°: (x, y) → (y, −x). Counterclockwise: (x, y) → (−y, x).
- To name a transformation, check two point pairs: same shift → translation, same ratio → dilation.
2 Ask a tutor
Tell us what you are stuck on. A tutor will follow up with a worked explanation.
3 Keep going
While you wait, review the lesson or drill practice problems.
