Systems of Equations Tutor Help
Stuck on systems of equations? Review the core ideas, read answers to common questions, and send a question to a tutor.
1 Quick recap
A system is two equations in the same x and y; the solution is the ordered pair satisfying both. Choose the method first: isolated variable → substitution, aligned coefficients → elimination, y = mx + b pair → graphing. Different slopes: one solution.
Core ideas
- Pick the method before computing.
- Substitution: replace the isolated variable.
- Elimination: add/subtract whole equations.
- Solution = ordered pair satisfying BOTH equations.
- Classify by slopes: different → one; same → none or infinite.
2 Questions students ask
The questions a tutor hears most about this skill.
Look at the structure: if one equation says y = … (or x = …), substitute. If the x-coefficients or y-coefficients match (or are easy opposites), eliminate. If both are y = mx + b with friendly numbers, graph.
No — a system solution is an ordered pair. Back-substitute to find y, then verify the pair in both original equations. Half the errors in systems are unfinished jobs.
The two equations describe the same line, so every point on it works. You will usually spot it when one equation is a multiple of the other.
