Comparing Fractions Practice

Skill: comparing-fractions

Comparing Fractions Practice

Which fraction is bigger? Use same denominators, same numerators, LCDs, and benchmarks to decide fast.

How to enter answers

  • Comparisons: type <, >, or =.
  • Pick-the-biggest: type the fraction, e.g. 7/8.
  • Simplest form is not required for comparisons — just the right sign.

Problem types

Benchmarks

Closest to 0, 1/2, or 1?

Example: closest to 1 among 2/9, 7/8, 4/7 → 7/8

Same denominator

Same pieces, count them.

Example: 5/8 __ 3/8 → >

Same numerator

Smaller denominator wins.

Example: 3/4 __ 3/8 → >

Unlike fractions

Rename with the LCD.

Example: 2/3 __ 3/5 → >

Greatest of three

Compare two at a time.

Example: greatest of 1/2, 2/3, 5/8 → 2/3

Against one-half

Above or below the halfway mark?

Example: 5/9 __ 1/2 → >

Common slip-ups

Bigger bottom = bigger fraction

1/8 > 1/4 is wrong: a bigger denominator cuts smaller pieces. Same numerator → smaller denominator wins.

Comparing tops only

With different denominators, tops alone lie. Rename with the LCD first.

Cross-product mix-up

Label each cross product with its fraction — the product beside the first numerator belongs to the first fraction.
