Skill: two-step-equations
Two-Step Equations Practice
An endless supply of never-repeating two-step equation problems with instant feedback. Unwrap x in reverse order, watch the signs, and always check — one problem at a time.
1 Practice
Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first;
a second miss earns a second hint; a third miss walks you through the full solution.
How to enter answers
- Your answer: the value of x — an integer (
4), a fraction (3/2), or a decimal (2.5). You may also typex = 4. Equivalent forms count:8/2is accepted for4. - Word problems: type just the number the question asks for.
2 What you’ll practice
Every problem is generated fresh from 12 templates across the skill — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.
Basic two-step
ax + b = c with positive integers. Peel off the constant first, then divide.
Tricky signs
Subtraction inside, negative coefficients, and negative solutions — signs stay glued to their terms.
Division & fraction forms
x/a + b = c and (kx)/d + b = c. Clear the constant, then clear the fraction.
3 Watch out for these
The three mistakes students make most often here.
Wrong: 2x + 5 = 13 → x + 5 = 6.5 Right: 2x + 5 = 13 → 2x = 8 → x = 4. Undo in reverse: the +5 comes off first.
Wrong: 5 − 2x = 11 → 2x = 6 → x = 3 Right: −2x = 6 → x = −3. Terms carry their signs until you divide.
Wrong: answering 7 − 3x = 1 with x = −2 and moving on. Right: check x = 2: 7 − 3(2) = 1 ✓. Ten seconds, catches everything.
