Proportions Practice

Skill: proportions

Proportion Practice

An endless supply of never-repeating proportion problems with instant feedback. Solve for x wherever it hides, test true-or-false proportions, and work map, recipe, and rate problems — one at a time.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss walks you through the full solution.

Score counts first-try correct answers. Streak counts consecutive correct answers.
Solve for x

How to enter answers

  • Numbers: an integer (3), a fraction (2/3), or a decimal (12.7).
  • True or false: yes or no.
  • Finish the algebra — enter the value of x, not the cross-product equation.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from 11 templates across three question types — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Solve for x

Cross-multiply and solve, wherever x hides — numerator, denominator, or inside a two-step expression.

x/5 = 12/20 → x = 3

True or false?

Test proportions with cross-products before you trust them.

2/3 = 4/6 → yes (12 = 12)

Word problems

Map scales, recipes, fuel economy, unit conversion, and scale models — units lined up on both sides.

1 in = 50 mi; 3.5 in → 175 mi

3 Watch out for these

The three mistakes students make most often on proportion problems.

1. Cross-multiplying the wrong pairs

Wrong: a × c = b × d.    Right: a × d = b × c — diagonal pairs. Draw the X.

2. Mismatched units in the setup

Wrong: eggs/pancakes = pancakes/eggs.    Right: the same units in the same positions on both sides.

3. Stopping at the cross-product equation

Wrong: “20x = 60” as the final answer.    Right: finish it: x = 3.
