Slope Intercept Practice

Skill: slope-intercept

Slope-Intercept Practice

An endless supply of never-repeating y = mx + b problems: read m and b, evaluate, write equations, build from two points, and find x-intercepts.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss walks you through the full solution.

How to enter answers

  • Slopes and intercepts: integers, fractions (2/3), or decimals.
  • Equations: type y=2x+3, y=-x+1/2, y=3, or x=-2 — spaces are fine.
  • Fractions: 2/3 or -3/2; mixed numbers like 1 1/2 also work.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from templates across several question types — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Read the form

Spot m and b hiding in y = mx + b — including fractions.

y = (2/3)x − 4 → m = 2/3, b = −4

Write equations

From a slope and intercept — or straight from two points.

m = −1, b = 5 → y = −x + 5

Intercepts

The y-intercept is free; the x-intercept takes one solve.

y = 2x − 6 → x-intercept 3

3 Watch out for these

The mistakes students make most often on these problems.

1. b is not the x-intercept

Wrong: y = 2x − 3 has x-intercept −3.   Right: b = −3 is the y-intercept (0, −3).

2. Negative slope drawn backwards

Wrong: y = −2x + 1 climbing right.   Right: negative slope falls left to right.

3. Dropping b

Wrong: slope 2 through (0, 5) as y = 2x.   Right: y = 2x + 5.
