Add & Subtract Fractions Practice

Like denominators, unlike denominators, improper answers — rename, compute, simplify.

How to enter answers

  • Fractions: type 5/6.
  • Mixed numbers: type 1 1/4 (improper fractions like 5/4 also work).
  • Always write the answer in simplest form.

Problem types

Like denominators: add

Same pieces, add the tops.

Example: 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8

Like denominators: subtract

Same pieces, subtract the tops.

Example: 5/6 − 1/6 = 2/3

Unlike: add

Rename with the LCD, then add.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6

Unlike: subtract

Rename with the LCD, then subtract.

Example: 3/4 − 1/3 = 5/12

Improper answers

Convert to a mixed number.

Example: 3/4 + 1/2 = 1 1/4

Word problems

Pizza, ribbon, and measuring cups.

Example: 1/2 + 1/4 pizza = 3/4

Common slip-ups

Adding the denominators

12 + 13 = 2/5 is impossible — the sum must exceed 1/2. Rename first: 5/6.

Renaming only one fraction

After renaming, both denominators must match. Check before touching the numerators.

Leaving the answer unsimplified

6/8 as a final answer is incomplete — finish with 3/4.
