How to enter answers

  • For translations, type the expression plainly: x-5, 2n+3, 6m.
  • Spaces do not matter. Use * for times if you like: 2*x.
  • For evaluation questions, enter the number: 14, -17.

2 Problem types

The generator mixes these types at random.

Translate words to algebra

English → expression. Watch “less than”.

“5 less than x” → x−5

Translate trickier phrases

“More/less than twice” combos.

“3 more than twice n” → 2n+3

Evaluate ax + b

Substitute, then multiply first.

2 + 3x at x=4 → 14

Evaluate with the trap

a + bx: the trap is adding first.

2 + 3x at x=4 → 14, not 20

Evaluate a quadratic

Exponents before ×/÷ before +/−.

x² − 2x + 5 at x=3 → 8

Coefficients and constants

Name the parts of an expression.

7x³ + 2x − 9
