Slope & Intercept Lab
Drag the m and b sliders and watch the line pivot and slide in real time — with the rise/run staircase and both intercepts marked.
1 Slope & Intercept Lab
Move m to pivot the line around the y-intercept; move b to slide it up and down. The staircase shows rise over run.
y = x
2 What to notice
Three experiments.
1. m pivots, b slides
Set b = 2, then sweep m from −4 to 4: every line passes through (0, 2) but tilts differently. Now fix m and sweep b: the tilt stays, the line slides.
2. Rise over run, live
With m = 3/2 the staircase climbs 3 for every 2 across. With m = −1 it falls — always left to right.
3. m = 0 goes flat
Drag m to 0: the line becomes y = b, perfectly horizontal, with no x-intercept.
