Polynomial Operations Practice

Classify, evaluate, add, subtract, and multiply polynomials. Every problem is generated fresh — the numbers change, the method never does.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss earns another hint; a third miss walks you through the full solution.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from templates across several question types — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Classify

Name a polynomial by degree and term count.

4x³ − 2x + 7 → degree 3, trinomial

Standard form

Rewrite with exponents falling.

2x + x³ − 5 → x³ + 2x − 5

Evaluate

Substitute a value for x and compute.

2x² − 3x + 1 at x = 2 → 3

Add / subtract

Combine like terms; distribute the minus.

(3x²+2x−5) − (x²−7x+4)

Multiply

Every term times every term.

(x + 4)(x − 6) → x² − 2x − 24

Combine like terms

Simplify long expressions.

3x² + 2x − x² + 5 → 2x² + 2x + 5

3 Watch out for these

The three mistakes students make most often on these problems.

The minus misses a term

In (5x³ − 2x) − (2x³ + x² − 9), the minus must flip +x² to −x² and −9 to +9 — every term, not just the first.

Adding exponents when adding

x² + x² is 2x², not x⁴. Exponents add only when you multiply powers.

Degree = first term you see

In 7x² − x⁵ + 3 the degree is 5 — the highest exponent anywhere.
