Tutor Help: Multi-Step Equations
Stuck on multi-step equations? Recap the method, try the self-help fixes, or preview a tutor request.
The order never changes: distribute to clear parentheses, collect x-terms on one side and numbers on the other, combine, then divide. If the x-terms cancel, read the ending: false statement = no solution, true statement = infinitely many.
The two classic slips: distributing to only the first term in parentheses, and calling 0 = 0 “no solution” (it is infinitely many — a true statement).
Substituting your answer into both sides of the original equation is the fastest way to confirm.

1 Quick self-help
Three fixes that solve most stuck moments.
Parentheses everywhere?
Distribute first, completely — every term inside gets multiplied. Only then start collecting x-terms.
x vanished?
That is a special case, not a mistake. 0 = 4 means no solution; 0 = 0 means infinitely many. Write the ending down.
Fractions slowing you down?
Multiply every term by the denominator first thing. Clearing fractions early keeps the arithmetic clean.
