Mixed Numbers Practice

Skill: mixed-numbers

Mixed Numbers Practice

Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and back, then compare them like a pro.

How to enter answers

  • Improper fractions: type 5/2.
  • Mixed numbers: type 2 1/3.
  • Whole-number answers: type 4.
  • Comparisons: type <, >, or =.

Problem types

Mixed to improper

Multiply the whole, add the top.

Example: 2 1/2 = 5/2

Improper to mixed

Divide; quotient is the whole.

Example: 7/3 = 2 1/3

Compare mixed numbers

Wholes first, then fractions.

Example: 3 1/4 __ 2 7/8 → >

Missing numerator

Work the conversion backwards.

Example: 3 2/5 = ?/5 → 17

Mixed vs improper

Convert one side, then compare.

Example: 1 2/5 __ 7/5 → =

Word problems

Pizzas and ribbon in mixed numbers.

Example: 2 1/2 pizzas → 5/2

Common slip-ups

Multiplying the numerator too

2 1/2 = 4/2 skipped the add step. Multiply the whole, ADD the numerator: 5/2.

Forgetting the wholes in comparisons

The whole numbers decide first. 3 1/4 beats 2 7/8 even though 7/8 > 1/4.

Leaving a remainder unconverted

7/3 is not 2 R 1 as a final answer — write 2 1/3.
