Tutor Help: Literal Equations
Stuck rearranging formulas? Recap the method, try the self-help fixes, or preview a tutor request.
Treat every other letter as a number you have not met: the same inverse operations isolate your target. For ax + b = c, subtract b, divide by a — x = (c − b)/a.
The two classic slips: dividing only part of a side (keep the parentheses: (c − b)/a, not c/a − b), and stopping before the variable stands fully alone.
Verify with one numeric substitution: pick values for the letters, compute your expression, and confirm the original formula balances.

1 Quick self-help
Three fixes that solve most stuck moments.
Lost in the letters?
Circle the target variable. Everything else is a “number” — move it with inverse operations exactly as you would 5 or 3.
Not sure the rearrangement is right?
Substitute small numbers for every letter and check both sides. One test catches nearly every slip.
Formula with a fraction?
Multiply by the denominator first — clearing fractions early works for letters exactly as it does for numbers.
