Stuck on line forms? Review the core ideas, read answers to common questions, and send a question to a tutor.

1 Quick recap

One line, three names. Use point-slope y − y1 = m(x − x1) when you have a point and a slope (mind the signs!); distribute into y = mx + b to graph; clear denominators into Ax + By = C (A > 0) when you want intercepts: x-intercept C/A, y-intercept C/B.

Core ideas

  • y − y1 = m(x − x1): plug the point and slope straight in.
  • Subtracting a negative becomes plus: (−2, −5) → y + 5 = 2(x + 2).
  • Point-slope → slope-intercept: distribute, solve for y.
  • Slope-intercept → standard: clear denominators, x-terms left, A > 0.
  • Standard form intercepts: x = C/A, y = C/B.

2 Questions students ask

The questions a tutor hears most about this skill.

Which form should I start with?

Point and slope known? Start point-slope. Need a quick graph? Slope-intercept. Need intercepts or integer coefficients? Standard. Convert only when the job demands it.

Why does my standard form look different from the answer key?

Equivalent forms can differ by a nonzero multiple — but standard form is normalized (integers, A > 0, reduced), so there is exactly one right answer. Check yours against the rules.

Can I use any point in point-slope form?

Yes — any point on the line gives an equivalent equation. If your answer looks different, test: does the given point satisfy your equation?
