6. - Always simplify.
Problem types
Multiply fractions
Straight across, then simplify.
Example: 1/2 × 2/5 = 1/5
Cancel first
Shrink before you multiply.
Example: 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2
Divide fractions
Keep-change-flip.
Example: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2
Fraction of a number
“Of” means multiply.
Example: 3/5 of 10 = 6
Reciprocals
Flip it.
Example: reciprocal of 3/4 = 4/3
Mixed numbers
Convert, compute, convert back.
Example: 1 1/2 × 2/3 = 1
Common slip-ups
Cross-multiplying to multiply
2/3 × 3/4 is not 8/9. Multiply straight across: 6/12 = 1/2.
Flipping the first fraction
Keep-change-flip flips the second fraction only. The first one stays.
Forgetting to simplify
6/12 as a final answer is incomplete — finish with 1/2.
