Factoring Trinomials (a = 1) Practice

Find the two numbers, handle the signs, pull the GCF first, and solve by zero product. Fresh trinomials every round.

1 Practice

Type your answer and press Check answer (or Enter). A wrong answer earns a hint first; a second miss earns another hint; a third miss walks you through the full solution.

2 What you’ll practice

Every problem is generated fresh from templates across several question types — a problem never repeats until its whole pool is used up.

Two numbers

Product c, sum b — find m and n.

c = 12, b = 7 → 3, 4

Factor x²+bx+c

Write (x + m)(x + n).

x²+7x+12 → (x+3)(x+4)

Sign patterns

Name the signs before factoring.

x²−5x+6 → both negative

GCF first

Pull the GCF, then factor.

2x²+10x+12 → 2(x+2)(x+3)

Prime or not?

Decide if it factors over integers.

x²+3x+5 → prime

Zero product

Solve (x+m)(x+n) = 0.

x²−4x+3 = 0 → 1, 3

3 Watch out for these

The three mistakes students make most often on these problems.

Right product, wrong sum

(x+3)(x+4) gives +7x, not −7x. Both clues must hold.

Skipping the GCF

2x²+10x+12 needs the 2 pulled first — the method assumes a = 1.

Sign blindness

For c < 0 the two numbers have opposite signs. Do not list only positive pairs.
