Stuck on ratios?

Being stuck is normal — it means you are learning. Run through the checklist below first; most ratio snags untangle in under five minutes. Still stuck? Send a help request.

1 Before you ask: the 5-minute checklist

Work through these in order. Check off each one honestly.

  • 1Read the order twice. “Girls to boys” means girls go first. Write the two numbers in that order before you simplify. (Mistake 1)
  • 2Simplify with the GCF, not a guess. List the factors of both sides if you are unsure — dividing by any common factor twice beats one wrong guess. (Ratio simplifier)
  • 3Scale with multiplication, never addition. If you caught yourself adding the same number to both sides, start that problem over. (Ratio Table Lab)
  • 4For “per”, divide the right way. The word after “per” is the divisor: miles per hour means miles ÷ hours. (Mistake 3)
  • 5Check by rebuilding. Multiply your unit rate back up — 3 hours × 50 mph should give exactly 150 miles. If it does not, the rate is wrong.

2 Ask for help

Describe exactly where you are stuck. The more specific you are, the better the help you get.
