Stuck on proportions?

Being stuck is normal — it means you are learning. Run through the checklist below first; most proportion snags untangle in under five minutes. Still stuck? Send a help request.

1 Before you ask: the 5-minute checklist

Work through these in order. Check off each one honestly.

  • 1Draw the X. Cross-multiplication pairs are diagonal: a × d = b × c. If you multiplied straight across (a × c), redo it. (Mistake 1)
  • 2Line up the units. Write the units into the proportion before the numbers — eggs over pancakes on both sides. (Mistake 2)
  • 3Finish the algebra. 20x = 60 is step one, not the answer — divide to get x = 3. (Proportion solver)
  • 4Test with cross-products. If your answer makes a × d differ from b × c, something went wrong — find it before moving on. (Balance Lab)
  • 5Reduce first when numbers are big. 9/12 is 3/4 — smaller numbers, same proportion, fewer arithmetic slips.

2 Ask for help

Describe exactly where you are stuck. The more specific you are, the better the help you get.
