Stuck on probability?

Being stuck is normal — it means you are learning. Run through the checklist below first; most probability snags untangle in under five minutes. Still stuck? Send a help request.

1 Before you ask: the 5-minute checklist

Work through these in order. Check off each one honestly.

  • 1Check equally likely. Can you count individual, equally likely outcomes? If the sections, faces, or marbles are not equal, favorable-over-total does not apply. (Mistake 1)
  • 2Find the AND / OR word. “Both happen” means multiply (independent); “one or the other” means add (mutually exclusive). Circle the word first. (Mistake 2)
  • 3Try the complement. If the question says “not” or lists many failing cases, compute 1 − P(opposite) instead. (Complement tool)
  • 4Draw the tree or list. For two coins or two dice, list every path — HH, HT, TH, TT — before counting. Missing paths is the #1 error. (Experiments Lab)
  • 5Simplify the fraction. 12/52 is not finished — reduce to 3/13 before you box the answer.

2 Ask for help

Describe exactly where you are stuck. The more specific you are, the better the help you get.
