Why it works
Complex arithmetic extends real arithmetic with the single new rule i² = −1. Addition is component-wise (like vectors); multiplication uses FOIL plus i² = −1; division clears the imaginary denominator with the conjugate, since (c+di)(c−di) = c²+d² is real.
